5 Signs you Need Emergency Roof Repair

As a homeowner, there are a lot of things that you need to worry about when it comes to your investment. Honestly, it can be overwhelming, and we know that. We also know that one of the most significant investments that you’ll make when it comes to your house is your roof.

5 Signs you Need Emergency Roof Repair

A Roof Over Your Head

That’s the phrase that we use when we talk about comfort and security when it comes to our home and the family who sleeps within it. While falling asleep under the stars may seem romantic, it’s not something that you want to do every night.

When it comes down to it, replacing a roof can have some pretty hefty expenses that can go from four to five to even six figures. We know the thought of roof repair can be overwhelming.

Catching problems with your roof early may prevent significant damage from occurring in the future. Sometimes the things you find may alert you that repairs need to be made sooner rather than later. We want to help you by pointing out the areas you need to check often when it comes to your roof.

1. Shingles

One of the first things you notice on a roof is the shingles. While many people think that they are just for decorative purposes, shingles are a good help in protecting the base layer of the roof from weathering elements.

While you may not think about it because you are safe and warm inside your house, winds that may not seem significant to you can easily tear off shingles on your roof and cause substantial problems.

If you have an older roof and you’ve experienced storms lately, it won’t hurt to grab a ladder and go check. If a shingle is missing, damaged, or breaking, this could be an area where water can get in, and other shingles may be in danger of being destroyed. This could cause a ripple effect of destruction and put you in a position where you will be forced to look for emergency roof repair solutions. If you notice any missing shingles,  you want to make sure that you don’t let the uncovered areas go untreated.

2. Gutters

Don’t underestimate the impact gutters have on your home. If you see signs of what looks like black sand or mineral deposits in your gutters, then it’s probably from your shingles. It’s a common sign that they are wearing and tearing.

Also, make sure to look around the gutters for missing paint or cracks in the roof, which can also be a sign of water damage.

Another thing to pay attention to is any large trees around your house. Most of the time those tree branches are going to reach out near the gutter area of your home, and they can scratch and damage your roof as well. Any of these things can cause you to have to invest in some level of roof repair.

3. Attic

Not all signs that you need roof repair are on the outside. Many of the symptoms are on the inside of the house. One of the commonly ignored places is the attic.

Why? Because we usually use the attic for storage, and we don’t pay attention to it unless we are getting something from there. Still, the attic is a prime place for water to leak in and collect. It may not have even made its way to your ceiling yet.

Some hints on what to look for are dips and cracks in the rafters and damage around any area that light can come through. If you don’t have floors in the attic, check for moisture in whatever material is present.

4. Ceiling and Wall

Now let’s check your ceilings and walls. It’s a good idea to walk around your house occasionally and look up to see if you notice water streaks, wet areas, drip lines, or anything to indicate that something may be leaking somewhere. Leaks don’t always start huge, and small stains can go unnoticed.

5. Roof Objects

Some of us have roof objects. Whether it’s a chimney or a satellite dish, you should check around those areas to see if there is any damage from wind or storms. Often, the pressure from the elements can wear down the objects on your roof over time, and you won’t notice how detrimental the impact is to your roof until it’s too late.

Now that you’ve looked at the areas where issues might be lurking, it’s a good idea to be aware of the circumstances that should remind you to check these areas. The suggestions may sound simple, but you would be surprised at how many times we all overlook these little issues.

  • Storms and high winds:  Again, shingles and roof objects can be damaged and cause problems for your roof.
  • Impacts: Debris, tree branches, or even a ball thrown up onto the roof can cause some damage.
  • Animals: You may hear them scurry around and think that they can’t harm anything, but they can and sometimes do. Squirrels, cats, raccoons, birds, and more can do everything from digging holes to building nests to knocking things loose. And because the damage is on your roof-top, it can go unnoticed unless you are vigilant to check.
  • Snow and ice: It is essential that you do your best to clear snow and ice build-up off and away from your roof. The weight of snow, ice, and sleet can place a surprising amount of pressure on the top of your house, causing major destruction. Not to mention, ice and snow melt and can cause leaks.
