5 Signs of Storm Damage to Keep an Eye On

Storms can really do a number on your home, with your roof usually taking the hardest hit. Some of the damage might be super obvious, but other times it’s sneakier and harder to spot. As a homeowner, it’s super important to know how to spot any potential storm damage to your roof quickly.

Keep an eye out for these five signs:

1. Missing or Damaged Shingles

One clear sign your roof might have suffered from storm damage is if you notice missing or damaged shingles. High winds, hail, and flying debris can knock off or break shingles, making your roof more open to leaks and other types of damage. Make sure to check your roof for any spots where shingles are missing, cracked, curled, or torn. Remember, even a little bit of damage can really affect your roof’s condition, so it’s important to take care of it quickly.

2. Granule Loss

Granules on your asphalt shingles are like a superhero’s shield, protecting them from UV rays and rain. After a big storm, you might find more granules than usual in your gutters or downspouts. This loss of granules can make your shingles vulnerable and speed up wear and tear, leading to leaks and early aging. If you notice a lot of granules missing, it’s a sign that your roof took a hit from the storm and needs some care.

3. Water Stains or Leaks

Water stains on your ceilings or walls? They’re often signs of roof leaks, usually caused by storm damage. After a heavy rainstorm, why not check your attic or crawl space? Look for signs like damp insulation, discolored wood, or any mold growth. Remember, even small leaks can lead to big structural damage over time if ignored. It’s really important to fix them quickly to prevent any further issues.

4. Dented or Punctured Roofing Materials

Hailstorms can really do a number on your roof, causing all sorts of issues like dents, punctures, and indentations. It’s a good idea to check your roof for any signs of impact damage, including dented metal flashing, punctured shingles, or cracked tiles. Remember, even small dents or punctures can mess with your roof’s ability to keep water out, so it’s best to fix them up quickly to avoid leaks and more damage down the line.

5. Sagging or Drooping Areas

Severe storms can take a toll on your roof, sometimes leaving it a bit saggy or droopy in places. If you spot any parts of your roof looking a little sad and saggy, it’s a big heads-up that you’re dealing with some structural damage that needs a quick fix. Letting those saggy spots hang out without fixing them can lead to bigger issues and might even put you and your family in a risky spot.

Catching any storm damage on your roof early is super important to keep your home safe and sound. By jumping on repairs fast, you can get your roof back in tip-top shape without the stress of huge repair bills or major damage later on.
